Ugh, so relatable! Substitute the Discord chat I have with my comics friends for text and this is my life. I'm (not) ashamed to say that I check early and often, and late into the night. It's about connection--and you totally nailed that.
It's real connection! So a good thing to cultivate! I assume the 'garbage' does not come from these group chats, but other apps. Just chuck those (TikTok, insta etc) and you'll be fine.
