Hi 👋
I’m writing because I’ve been behind on substacking for a number of reasons.
The main one is that I was away for most of December on my honeymoon in Japan. I tried to journal even though it felt hard to do. Here are some highlights:
The other reason I haven’t been substacking as good as usual is because I’ve been painting a painting for my cousins’ new baby (and old baby), which has been fun and frustrating and slow in a nice way.
I started at the bottom and worked my way up and I think you can kind of tell I’m giving up on the birds but that’s kind of funny, which is good I guess.
The other reason my substacking has been past due is because I’m not sure what to say anymore. I’m a little tired of writing about myself and I’m not sure how much to share.
One of my worst or best qualities is that I don’t like to ask for help, but I wonder if maybe one of you has an idea about what I should make next. No bad ideas! Let’s spitball!
As always, thanks for reading, supporting, and subscribing <3

Hi Emily. First of all congratulations on your wedding and a happy new year!
I think you’re one of the funniest and relatable cartoonists on Substack and Instagram and in print. I totally understand the drain of drawing and writing about yourself, I occasionally do that and it can put me in a bit of a weird headspace. How about posts on the minutiae of everything? I’d love to read your take on all kinds of inconsequential stuff and nonsense. That makes it personal without being personal if you know what I mean.
Sometimes it helps me to just look for a pattern, or tell stories you hear, versus stories you experience. Crazy fights you hear couples having that you don't have. Little things you overhear in ny. Questions people ask you. Questions you ask in a day. Every round thing you see in a day. A weird conversation from every bench on your block. Dog interactions in the park. Every dog that looks like their owner. On the next big snow, envision the conversations between all the weird snowpeople in prospect park. So glad your honeymoon was so great. I love the painting. Another idea! What was hard to paint in every creature in your painting. Ok I'm done. You're the best.
